After being contacted by a physiotherapist from Red Cross Children’s Hospital, Wynberg Girls’ Interact decided to respond to a call for the creating, designing and making of picture books. We were told that the fine motor skills that children develop from turning the pages of books were sorely lacking. The parents of many of the patients cannot afford to buy books or lack resources to make picture books to stimulate their child’s movement or imagination.

Interact was approached to respond to this need. The girls carefully constructed their stories from magazine clippings in a flip-file, and wrote the original story written underneath these images. The hope is that when the patients are given the picture books, they might be prompted to take the pictures out and begin creating their own stories.

It was a wonderful session where the girls were forced to think out of the box and use their imagination.
