On Tuesday, 15th March, Wynberg Girls’ High School had the honour of unveiling a prestigious Blue Plaque. It was awarded to our school by the Simon van der Stel Foundation as testament to the age of the school and a distinguished past pupil, Ingrid Jonker.

Many guests who have a long association with our school joined together to celebrate this special occasion as the first of its kind to be awarded to our school. Ms Sigi Howes, the President of the Centre of Conservation In Wynberg, spoke on behalf of the Simon van der Stel Foundation about the origins of the Blue Plaque and its meaning to Wynberg Girls’ High. Mrs Harding thanked the foundation for considering our application which was awarded to the school for its historical contribution in each of the four pillars of the school – Academic, Culture, Sport and Service – and for the celebration of our past pupils. Perhaps one of our most famous past pupils is Ingrid Jonker, and we were fortunate that Simone Venter, her daughter was able to be there who delivered a personal and heart-warming poem in memory of her mother who died 50 years ago.

All guests present had the privilege of joining Mrs Harding and Mrs Venter in the unveiling of the Plaque outside of Ballet Hall.
