Wynberg athletes selected to represent province…

track eventThe 1st – 4th of March marked a busy period for Wynberg’s athletes competing in the Western Province High School Athletics Championships. This round of the competition, the final qualifying round before athletes are selected to represent the Western Province team, ran over four days, beginning on the Wednesday afternoon and ending with the final event, the relay, on Saturday evening.

After qualifying at each round prior to the championships, our athletes nervously awaited their events, their stomachs doing somersaults as they warmed up and prepared to compete against some of the toughest competition in the province, with the Northern Zone’s athletes presenting the greatest threat in the fight for the gold medal. Despite this, our athletes gave it their all and made Wynberg proud, with four of our eight athletes earning a position in the provincial team! These athletes will be representing the Western Province team in a total of seven events – an incredible accomplishment for all of the involved individuals who are more than deserving of this major achievement.

We salute all girls who participated and congratulations to the following girls on making the Western Province team:

Beth Good – 1500m, 3000m
Gina Walker – High jump, triple jump
Jessica Petersen – Triple jump
Lara Johnson – 100m, 200m

We wish these athletes the best of luck for the next round of the competition. These outstanding results are an accurate reflection of the amount of hard work all of our athletes have put into the last few weeks of competing. Well done to our entire athletics team and athletics coach, Mrs Williams, for filling us with Wynberg Pride!
