Wynberg Girls’ High well represented in the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Ensemble

cpyo23 -25 January was the annual Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra/Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble camp in preparation for the New Year. Approximately 70 young men and women attended the camp held at the Manyano Centre in Paarl.

The purpose of the camp, organized by education and outreach manager Laurika Steenkamp, was to provide intensive training in new repertoire and to concentrate on what is being played on February 19 at the City Hall.  Although it is early in the academic year for such hard work, it works!

The camp was sponsored in full by the CPO to thank the young musicians who participated in the all-night shoot at the City Hall last October for the new Sean Penn/Charlize Theron film.” 1

It is clear from descriptions of this camp that it is a time of intense learning and creativity. But particularly exciting for Wynberg, is that 10% of the members of this group of top young musicians come from our school – 3 are past pupils and 4 are currently at Wynberg Girls’ High.
After the re auditions which took place on the first evening of camp we were told about our new placing details: past pupils Helen Slater plays 2nd clarinet for the CPYO, Lauren McDonald plays 1st Violin for the CPYO and Carla Stokes plays 1st and 2nd Clarinet for the CPYWE 1st and 2nd clarinet. Pupils currently at Wynberg include Nadine Eddy who plays 2nd clarinet for the CPYWE, Hong-Ju Nam who plays 1st Flute for the CPYWE, Amy Gribble who plays 2nd violin for the CPYO  and Carin Donson who plays 2nd French Horn for the CPYO 2nd French horn.
