Although Wynberg Boys’ High were not combining with us for Athletics Meet, and we felt that it may well have disadvantaged us to some extent, the team was confident and determined to make an impression.

From the word go, our girls started dominating on the track. In the 90 metre hurdles, our  U14 girls, Sara Van Zyl and Taylor Fisher came 1st and 2nd; the U15 girls,  Brooke Jacobs and Carrie Schaller came 1st and 2nd in the same race. Our U17 hurdlers were Viktoria Ehm and Catherine Nothling who came 1st and 3rd in the same race, and our U19 runner, Susanna Purisiol came 3rd.

At the first announcement of the number of points scored, we had to pinch ourselves as we heard that we were in 2nd position,  and only 40 points behind first place school, Shiloah.

Well then then challenge was on: our athletes made a clean sweep  in the 100 m, 200 m, 400 m,800 m,1500 m and 3000 m events, taking 1st and 2nd places. Our Captain, Berzilee Pipes, led by example coming 1st in both the 100 and 200 meter sprint events, as well as being a part of a winning relay team.

Our u/14’s brought in excellent results: between them, they earned 7 Gold medals and 5 Silver. The top u/14 athlete of the day goes to LARA JOHNSON who won the 100 m in a time of 13.38sec and the 200 m with a time of 26.10sec.

Our under 15’s didn’t let the standard drop either: they brought in a total of 7 Gold Medals and 7 Silver medals. The U15 athlete of the day has to go to Jessica Stephens who won all 3 event with the following times, heights and distances: 100m Sprint – 13.37 seconds; High Jump – 1.5 meters and Long Jump 4.87 meters.

The U17 group were under pressure: the competition is always tougher, as this grouping includes 16 and 17 year olds. Our girls didn’t disappoint,  collecting  9 Gold Medals, 6 Silver medals and 1 bronze. The top U17 athletes for the day was Lauren Jonathan winning the 1500 m with a time of 5:53:00; the 3000 m with a time of 12:03:00 and taking 1st place in the triple jump event with a distance of 10:33 meters. The other top U17 girl for the day was Viktoria Ehm,  winning the 100 meter hurdles in 18.44secs, the 400 meter hurdles in 1:19:00 and taking 1st place in Long Jump with a  distance of 4.48m.

Our under 19 age group were not going to be left behind, getting 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 bronze medals. Our Captain Berzilee Pipes took the title of top U19 athlete winning the 100m in 14.09sec, 1st place in 200m with a  time of 23.20sec and also taking her relay team to victory. Special mention should also be made of Tyler Warrin who ran the 100 m, 200 m and 400m and  the relay.  She won all her races.

There were 9 schools competing – Bergvliet, Shiloah, Cape Academy, Simonstown, Hout Bay, Sibelius, Masiphumelele, Herschel and Wynberg Girls’ High School. We won the section with a total 363 points, beating Shiloah by 40 points.

It was hard for the Athletics team to come down from the exhilaration of  this win!
