Once again Wynberg Girls’ High was amongst the schools invited to Leeuenhof, the official residence of the Premier of the Western Cape. The award we received, as on previous occasions, was Category 1 – Excellence in academic performance.

In this category, awards are made to all schools in the province (including independent schools) that have achieved excellence in academic results in 2015, based on the following criteria:

Category 1a – all schools

  1. Consistency in number of Grade 12 candidates over the 3 year period of 2013 to 2015
  2. An overall pass rate of at least 95%
  3. Percentage of candidates with access to Bachelor’s degree study that is 80% and above
  4. Percentage of candidates with Mathematics passes that is 60% and above

The ranking of schools is determined by calculating a weighted ranking index as follows:

  • Point (b) above: 10% weight
  • Point (c) above: 60% weight
  • Point (d) above: 30% weight

This year there were two sections within this category: those schools who obtained between 80 and 89% Bachelor Passes, and those who obtained between 90 and 100% Bachelor Passes. We were placed in the top category.

Nicole Wentzel one of the top achievers in the Western Cape, obtaining 8 distinctions in the final exam, was also invited to the ceremony. Debbie Schäfer had these words to say about the learners invited to the ceremony:

Wow! You have done us proud. I am SO proud of you, your schools are proud of you, this government is proud of you and I am sure that I can say, without putting words in her mouth, that Minister Motshekga is proud of you. To achieve such outstanding results takes dedication and commitment throughout your entire school career, and for many of you, extra hard work in your matric year. Well, your hard work has now paid off.

Those of you who have studied under very difficult circumstances, you are true champions.

Whatever you wish to do from now on, I wish you all the very best. Work hard, have fun, appreciate your friends and family, and do what you can to help our country.

Believe in yourself, don’t lose your integrity, and never give up.

And once again, congratulations to all who are receiving awards.

Well done Wynberg Girls’ High and especially Nicole for your well earned achievements.
