1st Team vs DF Malan – Thursday 31 July at WGHS at 6pm

Lost 0-2

This fixture was always going to require that the Wynberg team play with guts and determination and the 1st half of the game was certainly a fine example of just how much the girls are capable of when they are focussed on the task at hand. Valeshka Harkhu in goals was key in keeping the team’s spirits up as she parried a number of attempts on goal. The team worked hard to keep the ball out the midfield and forced a number of counterattacks to put the DF defence under pressure. The Wynberg defence of Robyn Burrows, Chelsea Manoek, Donna Jacobs and youngster, Amber Bailey held steady until midway through the second half when DF forced their way in to score. This goal took the wind out of the Wynberg sails and the team lost its structure which resulted in another goal for DF. Wynberg was unlucky not to score in the last 5 minutes of the game when they upped their intensity and blew holes in the tiring DF defence, turning over ball regularly and applying pressure. They showed their potential in those last few minutes and we wait to see if they can carry this on into the Pinelands fixture on the weekend.

1st Team vs Pinelands

Won 1-0

The Wynberg team approached this fixture with some nervousness as Pinelands has pulled off a few upsets in the Girls’ League this season. But right from the start the team stuck to their game plan and attacked with flair through the flanks, forcing some saves from the Pinelands keeper. Wynberg would have been on scorecard early in the game but an unfortunate umpiring error saw Erin Prince’s snorter of a goal disallowed. Berzilee Pipes was admirable as she made run after run in the strike line to provide passes for the links, all of whom worked hard in this game, along with Chelsea Manoek’s attacking runs from the right half position.

Wynberg played some good hockey but gave away too much possession while attempting to move into the attacking half 25. Luckily Valeshka Harkhu in goals was once again resolute as she stopped a flurry of Pinelands shots to keep Wynberg heads up. Eventually the goal came through a well-worked short corner combination of Jamie Southgate and Erin Prince, who worked the ball into the Pinelands goal.

The score remained 1-0 to Wynberg and we are thrilled with this result. Here’s to wins for our remaining 4 fixtures.

2nd Team

Won 1-0

On Saturday the 2 August, the second team played a great game against Pinelands, winning 1-0.

3rd Team

Won 3-0

Saturday saw a great victory for the 3rds beating Pinelands high 3-0. We dominated throughout the game , having most of the possession. The first goal was scored in a short corner after the ball came off a Pinelands player . It was a magnificent goal by Tamar Kendon who deflected it in from the corner after it was hit in by Danielle Page . The second goal was scored by Stacy Samuals. The last goal was a team effort from Tamar Kendon who popped it in front of the goals and then was finished off with a slight touch by Mikayla Visser. It was a great game where we fully worked together. WELL DONE GIRLS!!

Won 2-1

The U16A side had a good 2-1 win over Pinelands on Saturday. Wynberg dominated initially but Pinelands found their feet and got back into the game. The game flowed from end to end with Wynberg holding out for the win with two great goals from Demi Steenkamp who was the Man of the Match.

Won 7-0

The U16B hockey team beat Pinelands 7-0 on Saturday. The team played lovely passing hockey, creating many scoring opportunities. Goals were scored by Farah Isaacs (3), Jenna Featherstone (2) and Megan Gierdien (2). A great team effort – well done girls.

Lost 0-1

The under 16c team were on the front foot most of the game taking shots from every part of the D but were unfortunately without their centre link due to a broken arm in the week.  The team became complacent as they felt they were in complete control and in the dying moments Pinelands got a turn over ball and manage to score a goal to secure the win.

Won 5-0

First half goals: 1 (Jenna Grey)

Second half goals:  4 (Jenna Grey x2, Taara Abrahams, Megan de Beer)

Player of the match: Jenna Grey

Did not play.

Lost 0-1

Unfortunately the U14 Super C’s lost 1-0 to Pinelands. They put up a good fighting having had so many short corners but just couldn’t finish.
