In conjunction with Marshall Music and Coca-Cola, twelve top high school bands from around the Peninsula were selected to perform in February at the V&A Waterfront outdoor Amphitheatre. These bands included

Sans Souci Girls’ High School, St Josephs College, Bergvliet High School, Wynberg Boys’ High School, Milnerton High School, Somerset College, Heathfield, Westerford High School, Rustenburg High School, Settlers High, SACS and Wynberg Girls’ High School.

Audiences and visitors to the Waterfront were invited to start off their weekend with “the sounds of drums, piano, guitar and saxophone as the Amphitheatre at the water’s edge was alive with harmonious music!” All bands performed every Friday evening, from 6pm

The event was described as “local talent at its best” and the stakes were high. The winning school would receive a musical consultation and installation to the value of R20 000 from Marshall Music. The bands will be judged by a panel of industry experts on musicality, presentation and patronage.

We were delighted to hear that we (were the only girls’ school who) had made it to the finals on Friday 7 March,  where we were judged by a panel of industry experts which include Dr Andrew Lilley, Gavin Minter and Major Vernon Michels.

Dr Andrew Lilley graduated from the Berklee College of Music where he studied with recording artist Enya and renowned pianist Ray Santisi. Gavin Minter has performed all over the world with bands and artists including the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, Johnny Fourie, The Cape Town Jazz Orchestra, Arno Carstens, Judith Sephuma and Stevie Wonder. Major Vernon Michels is the Director of Music for the South African Army Band.

Coca-Cola sponsored the School Spirit Award: named the Coca-Cola gig rig, this fun and interactive activation will take place at our school’s chosen event and will includes sound and lighting equipment.

Wynberg Girls High was absolutely delighted to hear that we had won the spirit award, and came third in the competition. We congratulate all of our competitors on the 7th.
