On the 16 June, South Africa celebrated Youth Day. At our school, this day is particularly important because it epitomises the rights we stand for: growth, equality and the actualisation of every child’s potential – the ability to be the best person they can be. With this in mind, the service and sports pillar teamed up to create a day of fun for Tenterden Safe House.

The day started off with the children getting as creative as possible while  designing their teams flag. The first sports session had Team A undergoing Netball Skills and practicing a few hoops while Team B learnt soccer skills from Wynberg Boys’ Sport Committee. After a quick water break the teams swopped.

Cupcake decorating was also part of the day’s fun and got a little sugar-rush going to urge everyone on despite the cold weather.

By lunchtime all the children were beyond excited as they saw the Spur tent being set up.

A big thank you to Mr Gert Knoetze and his Topeka Spur team for their generous donation of yummy burgers.

The day ended off with the both teams putting their soccer and netball skills into practice in the respective soccer and netball tournament. Both teams showing some impressive goals. To finish off a mini award ceremony was held where every child received a goodie bag and a certificate and both teams even won a trophy! In the words of some of the children, Youth Day was the most fun we’ve had in ages!
