On Saturday 17th September, the first squash team consisting of Ashlyn Southern, Demi Steenkamp, Kaylee Marshall, Isobel Evans and Inge Tripod, competed at the PGSGU Inter Schools Squash Tournament held at Western Province Cricket Club. The team was hoping to defend their title and bring back the trophy which Wynberg had won the year before.

The setup of the tournament is different from normal squash tournaments. Each match is played for 9 minutes straight or until one of the players reach 44 points. These matches can be quite tiring as there is no break. The morning began with Wynberg playing Herschel. It was a good start for Wynberg, who achieved a 4-1 win. Wynberg’s next match was against Rustenburg and the Wynberg team played very well to get a 4-1 win.

The last set of matches of the morning for Wynberg, were against Springfield, our toughest opponents. Wynberg fought hard and the scores were very close at the end, however Springfield narrowly won 3-2.

The end results saw Wynberg narrowly miss out on first place. It was a good morning of squash and the first team must be commended on a very good performance. Isobel Evans and Inge Tripod won all of their matches. It was also the last time the 2 matrics in our team, Demi Steenkamp and Kaylee Marshall, would play squash for Wynberg. They have both been involved in Wynberg squash since grade 8 and have contributed a lot to the sport. We thank them for their commitment, enthusiasm and hard work – they will be missed.
