Heads of Houses and Matric Leaders
There are eight houses within Wynberg Girls’ High: Apsley, Cavanagh, Constantia, Copenhagen, Kirsten, Silverlea, Waterloo and Wellington. Within each house, there are four tutor groups, each of which has a matric leader, who reports to the Class tutor and the Head of her House.
The responsibilities of the Heads of Houses include
- Developing House spirit and involvement in all house events
- Organising and encouraging cheerleaders
- In conjunction with the Class Tutor, and House Co-ordinator administering the system of merits and demerits
- Initiating a number of house events and challenges to encourage greater participation and involvement within the school
- Working to foster an environment within the house where students are involved, productive, motivated and recognised
- Liaising with the matric leaders in each of the four tutor groups
- Liaising with the heads of sport, culture, academics and service.
The Matric Leader is part of the backbone of our pastoral system. The purpose of the House and Tutor group system is to create a more family feel within the school, where the older girls start to learn to take care of the younger members and the grade peer groups are broken up to help girls share more openly. The Matric Leader is a mentor to all of those within her group and in this role will perform some of the following functions:
- Reminding of important deadlines
- Support and encouragement
- Recognition of the achievements of the girls within the group
- Monitoring of progress
- Establishing boundaries
- Using channels of communication/leadership to highlight achievements and point out difficulties
