Well done to Wynberg Girls' & Rustenburg Girls' High Schools for taking top honours on 10 March, and moving through to #SPARHockey finals 🏑👍🏼
On Saturday 10 March, the first team hockey girls played in the annual SPAR tournament. There was much excitement as it was the first time that we were playing together as a team. For most of the girls, it was the first time we'd played hockey for a long time - but on the field it didn’t look like that at all.
The first game saw us taking on Table View High School. The game started off slowly, but as it progressed we picked up our pace and saw 2 goals go into the back of the net - one from Aaminah Domingo and the other from Jade Yardin, one of the new players in the team.
Game 2 was against one of our long-time rivals, Springfield. It was an intense match, with both sides having equal opportunities to score. Wynberg played some amazing hockey as a new team, and held the score 0-0.
Wynberg played Pinelands third. On the pitch, Wynberg looked tired and the structure and stimulation was lost from the previous game. Despite this, perseverance and determination enabled us to prevent our opposition from scoring and the final score was 0-0.
Game 4 was against the U16 Invitational team from Wynberg, which saw sisters take each other on. Many hugs and laughs were shared before and after the game. It was an amazing showcase of Wynberg's talents, and the passing was some of the best. The game ended in a 6-0 win in the First Team's favour. The goals were scored by Keightley Walsh, Hajira Lockhat (2), Jenna Grey and Michelle Boshoff (2). This game lifted our spirits and prepared us for the last game of the day against Elkanah House.
Elkanah House was the deciding game for the top spot of Pool A. Our legs were tired, but our determination and resilience stronger: we brought to the field all of our talent. It was yet another game of great hockey, and the two goals from Rabecca Rooy and one from Haanim Samaai saw the tournament ending with Wynberg on top of Pool A.
All in all, it was a promising start to the season and the team looks forward to going into league.
