“Out there things can happen, and frequently do,
To people as brainy and footsy as you.
Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You'll Go!

More than anything, the staff of Wynberg Girls' High School have wanted to pay tribute to the immense contribution Shirley Harding has made to the school to which she has given her life. We wanted it to be an occasion which signalled our deep love of and respect for her; our appreciation of the leadership and mentorship she has offered and a celebration of her limitless energy and sense of fun. More than anything, we wanted it to be an occasion that she enjoyed.

On Friday night, with Shirley's family members, staff, principals from our Campus of Schools and broader surrounds, and members of the Education Department we celebrated this extraordinary leader in education, and the privilege it has been for us to have worked with her.

The event was organised by our Marketing Officer, Tammy Duggan and Dayna Pearce, Assistant Head of Culture, and overseen by David Burrell, one of our Deputy Principals. It included a fine balance of ceremony and celebration. With the event masterfully emceed by Melissa McCarthy (not the actress, but also Deputy Principal, as she wittily remarked), there were toasts and tributes from Granville Stander, Director of the Metro South Education District; Nicki Stock, Chairperson of the Wynberg Girls' High School Governing Body and Keith Richardson, Principal of Springfield Convent and former (retired) Principal of Wynberg Boys' High School. Common themes emerging alluded to Shirley's epitomising the six core values of Wynberg, her visionary leadership, enormous energy and capacity for fun, and her work ethic.

Here, at Kelvin Grove, we took a moment to reflect on all that she has achieved and celebrate her fearless and remarkable leadership, agreeing with Dave Burrell when he said: "Our greatest tribute to you will be to carry on with your good work in the future so that our wonderful school continues to flourish."

Learning from the wise words of Dr Seuss, we know for ourselves and for Shirley

“Out there things can happen, and frequently do,
To people as brainy and footsy as you.
And when things start to happen, don't worry, don't stew.
Just go right along, you'll start happening too!”

― Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You'll Go!
