She eats, sleeps and breathes it! Helen Slater and Music are synonymous.
Tutor Group: Mrs N Nel
This incredibly talented musician is in a league of her own. She plays three instruments: the Flute, Saxophone and Clarinet. The Clarinet is her first instrument and having played it for eight years consistently, it is not hard to tell that it is her favourite.
She spreads her talent across more than 10 different ensembles and orchestras, and plays every day of the week, excluding Sunday. She is an important senior musician in the Wynberg Girls' High School Clarinet Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band and Orchestra, which she heads up. In addition she has been a committed and talented member of the the Choir since 2008.
She performs in three different Beau Soleil Bands, namely The Senior Band (6years), Clarinet Choir (7 years) and Woodwind Quartet, for one year. One of her proudest achievements to date is her position as Second Clarinet in the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. She has spent two and a half years performing all over Cape Town with the Orchestra, and spends most of her weekend rehearsing for these performances. And the list of her commitments just keeps on growing. Helen is also a member of The Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Orchestra as well as the Cape Philharmonic Youth Sax Ensemble - upon demand.
Humble, organised and efficient, Helen continues to amaze her educators and fellow peers. She performs at almost every school event. While her love of music is abundantly clear, and she is a fine role-model to the other young musicians around her. A question that many ask is how she does it? Her answer is simple: music is not a subject to her, rather it is her purpose.
