The Head of the Wynberg Girls' High RCL, Erin Harris, reports on the conference attended and hosted by the Wynberg High School Representative Councils of Learners.
On Saturday, 8 June, the Wynberg Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools RCLs hosted the leadership conference, WYNCON. The event was open to all grades from both Wynberg Boys' and Wynberg Girls' High Schools, where the learners of the schools came together to discover more about what it means to be an effective leader. By listening to a guest speaker and engaging in constructive conversations, the learners focused on the topics of empowerment and inclusivity, and grappled with the ways in which school leaders could attain the power and capacity to effectively bring about change.
The guest speaker, Kgotso Hope Lekau, gave an inspiring account of his life and offered impactful views on his experiences of being a leader amongst today’s youth. As one of the 100 Young Mandelas in the country, Kgotso made the very insightful point that we are the new generation - we cannot live in hope and wait for ‘the future generation’ to bring about change. ‘The future generation’ is here now and we are the ones, as young leaders, who need to make and bring about immediate reform for the betterment of our country and the world as a whole. Discussions around controversial topics were quickly under way once Kgotso opened the floor. The learners were able safely and effectively to express their viewpoints. It was heart-warming and inspiring to witness a room full of young adults listening to, engaging with and respecting one another’s opinions in a constructive and respectful manner.
After a short tea and coffee break, the learners participated in a group activity where they formulated points on how, as leaders, they could empower and be inclusive of those within our schools. After each group’s report back, conversation emerged around how our schools could bring about change effectively by implementing what they had discovered about empowerment and inclusivity during the session.
WYNCON 2019 was a great success. The leaders of Wynberg Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools left the conference armed with a significant sense of inspiration and empowerment.
