In an attempt to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Olympics to be held later this year, Michelle Edwards participated in the Yonex Irish International held in Lisburn, Ireland, VII Italian International in Rome, Italy and the Hellas Victor International in Thessaloniki, Greece.
She is attempting to qualify in Mixed Doubles, however there is also the potential to qualify for Ladies Doubles.
Her results in these three tournaments improved with a second round loss in the Irish Open, and then a quarter finals placing in the final Greek Tournament.
The Olympic Qualification period ends on 1 May 2008, after which SASCOC (South African Sports Commission) will then decide if she has qualified whether or not she will go.
Before that however she will be competing in the Uber Cup (Women’s Team Event) Competition in the Kenyan International, the Mauritian International and the Nigerian International to further improve her world ranking and her chances of qualifying for the Olympic Games.Her current ranking is 123 for mixed doubles and 87 for ladies doubles.
Kenyan International Badminton Tournament
Playing in Kenya in the Uber Cup Africa qualifiers tournament, Ms Edwards won all her matches, singles and doubles, and helped South Africa beat Nigeria 3-2 in the final.
In the Mauritius International badminton tournament, she won the ladies and mixed doubles. Points earned from both of these tournaments count towards Olympic qualification so Ms Edwards has added considerably to her total.
