A fine balance of familiarising, fun and forging friendship were on the Matric's agenda in welcoming our Grade Eight to their new home-from-home.
Our 2019 Grade 8s of the hostel were welcomed by the staff and hostel matrics on 7 January, two days before school began. Parents helped their daughters unpack and decorate their rooms, and everyone was treated to a light lunch, where the 2019 leaders were introduced.
When it came time for the parents to say goodbye, the Hostel matrics had the intended purpose of getting to know our new arrivals better. The afternoon started off with a quick ice breaker where girls were able to learn each other's names and some interesting facts about each other. They then moved onto minute-to win-it challenges, where 2 mixed teams of new Grade 8s and Matrics competed against each other, this included trying to get a biscuit from their head to their mouth without using their hands and using only a balloon to get cups off the table.
In the late afternoon, the girls wrote a letter to their future matric self - now a tradition for Grade 8’s who come to Waterloo House. It was then that the Grade 12 girls were able to read their letters that they wrote 4 years ago. Many were shocked at their bad spelling and untidy handwriting! The girls ended the day off with our screening the movie Central Intelligence, popcorn and snacks in the common room.
The Matrics made every effort to make the our new home-from-home family members feel welcome.
